ald.net Services is pleased to support and recommend email clients that take full advantage our our secure IMAP email services. These are our preliminary recommendations. We will update them to reflect our (and your) continuing experiences with different email clients.

Recommended Client programs for our secure IMAP Services:

Currently, we have four recommended email clients:
Mozilla Thunderbird (officially supported)
Mozilla Suite
Netscape Communicator
PC-Pine

Mozilla Thunderbird
Mozilla Thunderbird is the newest and friendliest free IMAP client. It is our top-rated pick, and at least at first, our only officially supported IMAP Client. Thunderbird seems quite usable and reliable, and is available for a variety of operating systems including MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and various UNIX flavors. In addition it supports the secure TLS protocol for maximum safety. This is the program we use (We started with Thunderbird 0.8 and currently use Thunderbird 1.0 compiled for FreeBSD). The MS Windows version is about 4.5 MB (approximately 10-15 min download on dialup).
Get Thunderbird

Note that thunderbird is a relatively small download (~4.5 MB) because it doesn't include the browser. If you want the matching browser, FireFox, that is a separate download. Alternatively, you can get Thunderbird, FireFox, and Mozilla all on a CD for $5.95 from the Mozilla Store.

Mozilla Suite
The Mozilla Suite includes the Mozilla browser, email client and HTML editor. It is available for MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc. We tested both version 1.6.8 (from last year), and the current version, 1.7.3 - both worked fine with our IMAP server. The MS Windows version is about 11 MB (approximately 25-38 min download on dialup). You can get it here:
Mozilla Suite

Netscape Communicator
Netscape Communicator is based on Mozilla, so it should work just as well. It also is available for MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc. It includes everything but the proverbial kitchen sink. The MS Windows full version is about 25 MB (approximately 55-90 min download on dialup)

PC-Pine
People used to the UNIX command-line environment could use PC-Pine. It is a considerably smaller download than the graphical interface clients. Note, however, it requires some technical expertise to install, configure, and use. :-) It is only available for MS Windows. Choose the non-Kerberos package (pm461w32.zip). It is about 2 MB (approximately 5-7 min download on dialup).

NOT Recommended
We do not recommend either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Both of these email clients have a number of problems with non-Microsoft mail servers which may cause you to lose your email. Also, they do not properly support the secure TLS protocol, although they can be used for IMAP in non-secure mode. In addition, most versions of both programs have a number of security problems which can allow viruses into your computer. They will, however, work with IMAP-based POP3, but without the full available security.

We do not support either Pegasus or Eudora as IMAP clients. The IMAP functionality doesn't seem very robust in our environment. However, a number of people prefer these for home use, since we supported them as POP clients for a number of years. Like the Microsoft products, they will still work with IMAP-based POP3, but without full security.
